The
National Security program is broad and covers a variety of projects.
We work to maintain and promote a strong national defense by educating members
on national and civil defense, and emergency preparedness; POW/MIA Awareness,
local and worldwide support of USO and other activities that assist our veterans,
members of the military and their families. Special ProgramsNational Community and Personal Preparedness Emergency Preparedness: Plan a project to assist in the preparation of citizens, and thereby their families, on how to deal with man-made or natural disasters. The emphasis this year will be the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) Program which offers training through the Citizen Corps Program /www.ready.gov for this information. Another source is “Are You Ready?” can be located at www.fema.gov/areyouready. An In-depth Guide to Citizen Preparedness (IS-22) is FEMA’s most comprehensive source on individual, family, and community preparedness. The guide has been revised, updated, and enhanced in August 2004 to provide the public with the most current and up-to-date disaster preparedness information available. Also the Red Cross offers a number of excellent resources at www.redcross.org, including a subscription to a free eNewsletter. Supporting Military Families POW/MIA Issues Consider the draping of the POW/MIA flag at all Unit, District, and Division meetings. The National League of Families of American Prisoners and Missing in Southwest Area site is located at www.pow-miafamilies.org. America Supports You: Our Auxiliary members need to raise awareness of the ongoing needs of our troops and their families at home to the local communities and assist them as the needs arise. Auxiliary units are encouraged to work collaboratively with The American Legion and the Sons of the American Legion in coordinating and offering programs/services that will benefit active duty military Encourage special program activities throughout the year including sending care packages to active military members with pre-paid phone cards, Adopting a Solider letter campaign, prayer support. The America Supports You program, of which the American Legion Auxiliary is an affiliate member, is a coalition of non-profit community organizations focused on helping our soldiers, sailors, airmen, the Coast Guard, Marines and National Guard. More information is available at www.americasupportsyou.mil. Welcome Home Troops Units are encouraged to work with other organizations and businesses to plan “Welcome Home” events on a local level. Promote all upcoming events through TV, radio, newspapers and flyers. Military Children and Month of the Military child :April Create a comprehensive ALA program that supports military children year-round and especially in April – a month designated for special recognition of their sacrifices. National Military Appreciation Month – May: Let’s show our military that we support them. Plan a special event honoring our military during the month of May including the recognition of those who have served and those that are still serving. National Military Appreciation Month has a comprehensive list of what’s planned for activities during the month of May at www.nmam.org. Supporting American Legion Programs Support the American Legion in its aims and purposes related to National Security including legislative advocacy, the blood drive program and the ROTC/JROTC programs Supporting other Military Related Initiatives USO: American Legion Auxiliary members are always needed as volunteers at the USO in your area. Monetary donations are always welcomed at the USO facilities. USO’s provide morale, welfare and recreation-type services to our men and women in uniform. The USO currently operates more than 120 centers worldwide, including seven mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. For more information go the www.uso.org. Blue Star Mothers/Blue Star Banners: Actively seek out mothers that have someone serving in the military and provide them with a Blue Star Banner. Plan an activity where the unit recognizes these families. Gold Star Mothers : Honor these mothers with Gold Star Banners, window decals and lapel tacks with one or more stars. Coupon Clipping: A way to provide economic support to our troops and their families. Defense Commissary Agency (DeCA) reports that commissaries located in foreign areas accept coupons up to six months after expiration. Before mailing coupons, check online for information about the individual commissary you would like to use. Check www.commissaries.com. Toasty Toes: Knit or crochet slippers for our men and women serving in the Armed Forces. There are 17 chapters around the U.S. who will take the items made and distribute them accordingly. For patterns and distribution information go to http://www.operationtoastytoes.org. Comfort Quilts: An organization formed by two Marine Mothers to provide quilts to the next of kin of Marines lost overseas. It has now expanded to and serves all branches of the Armed Forces. To contribute quilt squares, assemble a quilt kit or make monetary donations go to www.marinecomfortquilts.us. Instructions: All entries for each category listed below should be submitted in narrative form, double-spaced in narrative form and must not exceed 1,000 words. First page should have the Department, Unit name and number, Chairman’s name, address, and the name of the award entry. National President’s Award for Excellence: An award to the Unit with the best overall National Security Committee Program. Unit program must meet all required elements as stated in the Plan of Work Military Support Award will be presented to the Unit Chairman reporting the best overall program in activities that support our troops. Civil Preparedness Award will be presented to the Unit Chairman reporting the best overall program in Civil Preparedness for her community. ROTC/JROTC Program will be presented to the Unit Chairman reporting the Most Outstanding Promotion of the ROTC Program. |
